Title: 'Haunted by the Ghost of You'
Author:
but_can_i_be_trusted
Fandom: Inuyasha
Characters: Inuyasha, Kikyou
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Artist: Lord Huron
Album/Source: Strange Trails
Prompt: Line from the chorus
Song: 'The Night We Met'
Summary: Kikyou is still always there.
If only he could forget having ever loved Kikyou.
She doesn't have to be nearby; her scent doesn't even have to faintly touch the air. Kikyou is still always there. Like a quiet ghost that haunts Inuyasha's every footstep. Every beat of his heart.
Once, Inuyasha allowed himself to believe that he and Kikyou might be able to live their lives out together. Be each other's other halves. But fate, perhaps, and cruel manipulation, shattered that dream like glass.
Or maybe that dream never stood a chance of coming true, to begin with. Inuyasha doesn't know. Doesn't care. All he knows is that the very thought of Kikyou still stings.
Title: 'This is Me, Alone'
Author:
but_can_i_be_trusted
Fandom: Doctor Who
Characters: Tenth Doctor
Rating: PG
Warnings: Brief mention of mindrape
Artist: Linkin Park
Album: Hybrid Theory
Prompt: Song with a month in the title
Song: 'My December'
Summary: There was nothing else to do. Nothing.
Sick to his stomach.
Ever since wiping Donna's memories of him, the Doctor has felt sick. Mad at himself. She'd cried, begged, pleaded with him not to. He'd forced his way into her mind against her will, regardless.
There was nothing else to do. Nothing. It was a matter of life and death. Donna's life. Donna's death. The Doctor has lost too many people to allow one person to die, if he can prevent it. Was it the right thing to do? Maybe not. Was it necessary? Yes, without a doubt.
He had no choice. He has no desire to be put in that kind of no choice position again. Never wants to make the wrong choice for the right reason again.
It's better to be alone. Safer. Perhaps not for the Doctor. But it's certainly safer for those he meets.
That's all that matters.
Title: 'Hate Gave You Me for a Lover'
Author:
but_can_i_be_trusted
Fandom: Doctor Who
Characters: Eleventh Doctor
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Artist: Buckingham Nicks
Album: Buckingham Nicks
Prompt: Lyric with "love" or "hate"
Song: 'Frozen Love'
Summary: But that's not the point, is it?
Hatred brought us together, River Song and I. The hatred, and the fear, that the Order of the Silence felt for me, brought River into existence. Forced our paths to cross.
Caused her to fall in love with me. Me. The very man she was ostensibly born to destroy.
Ohh, I do love irony.
I don't know whether I love this woman, or not. I mean, I do love her. After a fashion. I love plenty of people, for plenty of reasons. She's the daughter of Amy and Rory. I love Amy and Rory. They conceived her in my TARDIS. Need I say more?
Now, put all that love together. All of the reasons for that love. Those reasons are enough for me to love River. So, yes. Without question. I love River Song.
Whether I love her the way she loves me, however...that's a little less clear. But that's not the point, is it? No; River is the point.
Despite the manipulation that brought River into existence, despite all of the bitter hatred that caused her to exist, she radiates love. Conceived in love, filled with love...fighting Hate with Love, the one weapon that Hate has no defenses against...
River Song...Melody Pond...is Love.
That's good enough for me.
Title: 'The Piper's Calling You to Join Him'
Author:
but_can_i_be_trusted
Fandom: Labyrinth
Characters: Sarah
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Artist: Led Zeppelin
Album: Led Zeppelin IV
Prompt: Song more than 7 minutes long
Song: 'Stairway To Heaven'
Summary: The Pied Piper, and his pipe dreams.
It feels good, the way that everything has changed.
Since emerging from the Labyrinth, Sarah feels herself to be a stronger person. She's been afraid; she's been in danger. Made priceless friends.
Now, she's standing before her enemy. Jareth. The ultimate Pied Piper is doing his best to tempt her to give up her quest. Weaving a web of beautiful words that hang in the air like suspended glitter.
Have others stood where she is now, she wonders? Did other people fight so hard, to stand before the Goblin King, and have the same choice presented to them?
Perhaps they have. And perhaps they've given in to temptation. She doesn't feel that she could truly blame anyone who did.
But Sarah's made of something stronger. She's aware of that now. And she has not struggled with all her might, just to surrender now.
The Pied Piper, and his pipe dreams. He may have lured others in.
She refuses to be one of them.
Title: 'I Rise to Meet the End'
Author:
but_can_i_be_trusted
Fandom: Pokémon (Spoilers for Pokémon Black/White)
Characters: N, Hilda
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Notes: Crossposted to
ficlet_zone
Artist: Evanescence
Album: Fallen
Prompt: Grief song
Song: 'Whisper'
Summary: He must be up to the task.
N feels his heart skip a beat as a familiar figure comes through the door to his throne room.
Hilda. She's come. Just as she was always meant to do. Destiny has brought her to this place.
How strange N suddenly feels, though, seeing her again. Over the course of their encounters throughout Unova, he's come to know her. Probably better than he's ever been able to know a human being. Hilda seems more like the fair lady out of a legend of her own. The sort of girl whom any hero should fight for, rather than against.
It isn't her fault that she's on the wrong side of this conflict. Someone had to be; fate simply chose for her to be that someone. The fault lies with those who have deceived her into thinking that her way of living is the right way. Her way of living is part of the lengthy shadow that hangs over Unova, over the entire world. The shadow of enslavement, of exploitation. Of putting innocent Pokémon in harm's way for profit and entertainment.
Hilda, though she fails to understand it, and through no fault of her own, represents that dreadful shadow.
N has been taught to stand for something more. To be the liberator of all Pokémon. He knows Pokémon, knows what they think and feel. Their pain is his own. As much as it makes his heart ache to send them out again and again to be hurt, he knows that his Pokémon, his treasured friends, trust him to be acting in their best interests. They're helping him to avenge them, and to avenge those unfortunate Pokémon who died for human greed. It is N's duty to see that those losses were not in vain. The price of that duty was always going to be pain. N has known it all along, and accepted it.
But something in N's heart abruptly quivers in fear. Hilda stands before him, determination in her eyes. Almost aglow with the most remarkable courage. As though she believes wholeheartedly that she is in the right, believes it as firmly as her Pokémon believe in her.
This fight won't be a simple one to win. That's good. An honorable victory is one that's been won with great effort. It wasn't enough to defeat the Elite Four and Alder. As challenging as those battles were, they were not the stuff of legend. N needs more, in order to truly prove himself worthy, and capable, of changing the world.
Worthy of facing an ultimate adversary.
N rises from his throne, pushing his fears aside. Courage brought Hilda to him, brought her across a number of thresholds, in order to challenge his convictions. He must be up to the task.
The time for doubt has come and gone. The end of both of their journeys has come at last.
It's time to stare his destiny in the eye.
