Album: Blackstar
Song: 'Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)'
Summary: The man who he once was would hate the man who he's become.
The man who he once was would hate the man who he's become.
Long ago--so long ago that he wishes he couldn't remember it--he called himself the Doctor. An inadvertent champion of the innocent. Viewed as a hero, though he'd never wanted that title for himself.
If he ever was that hero, then the former Doctor feels that he never will be again.
The unceasing vendetta between the Time Lords and the Daleks resonates all across the universe. It's gone beyond all semblance of control, on either side of the conflict. A wildfire, burning to cinders entire planets, whole star systems.
Was this, he wonders, the grand design that his people had in mind? Has Gallifrey always been this corrupt? Or has his society broken down so severely?
The man who was once the Doctor sometimes imagines that he can hear the screaming of countless helpless civilizations, caught in the crossfire. The tormented living, and the ghosts of the dead, calling out for help that he's no longer in a position to give.
He wonders...when will it all end? Will either side surrender? Or will both sides keep on and on, until they force the universe itself to implode?
The latter seems infinitely more likely, in his eyes. As much as the notion pains him, he feels that it might be just as well. What with all the crimes that both combatants have on their shoulders, with every drop of blood staining both Time Lord hand and Dalek casing alike, surely there's no such thing as atonement now.
And how can one atone for their sins, if no one remains to atone to?
