Summary: They have tossed their badges and are about to go their separate ways. Is parting inevitable, or can they still salvage something from the wreckage of their lives?
We'll blow it away, blow it away
Can we make this something good?
Well, I'll try to do it right this time around
The distance between the marina and the airport was both the longest and shortest drive Sonny felt he’d ever taken. The job, yeah, the job was a burned-out husk by the time they’d tossed their badges. Underneath the tang of bitterness was a sweet waft of sorrow that he could live with until it inevitably faded into a dull ache that only hurt when it rained. That wasn’t what was making him question every one of his life choices since birth.
That was down to the man in the passenger seat next to him.
You owe me your presence in that seat.
The echo from the past reminded him that very soon, only emptiness would occupy the space. There were already too many silences, each one heavy with unspoken words and unresolved feelings.
Rico’s voice unexpectedly broke into the gulf between them. “What do we owe each other?”
You’d think by now Sonny would stop being surprised that they could read each other’s minds.
Too many answers to that question. Everything. Anything. Nothing. But above all, maybe...
Honesty.
Finally. Totally.
Sonny opened his mouth to speak.
