Summary: Rico's on-again-off-again ex-girlfriend, Valerie, finds out some information that leads to a surprising revelation.
It came out like a river once I let it out
When I thought that I wouldn't know how
Held onto it forever just pushing it down
Felt so good to let go of it now...
Valerie heard they were having a commitment ceremony. She was convinced it was a wild rumor without a shred of believability, until she heard from Rico's cousin that he'd arranged for his father's wedding ring to be sent to him.
Then she wondered what woman he'd managed to convince to marry him.
That wasn't fair. Rico deserved to be happy, and Valerie couldn't blame their on-again-off-again trainwreck on him alone. He was like her drug, and once it was in her system again, she found it hard to stop using. That is, until he started coming on too strong, too possessive, and full of himself. Val fought too hard to own her life to turn it over to any man. Paid her dues by herself and made it through the loss and grief. She'd watched her life self-destruct and faced her demons. Now she was climbing out of the wreckage and figuring out how to start over. She needed to do it on her own. No man was going to waltz in and save her from herself, much as he might want to.
Maybe that was part of the problem; they both had too much pride for their own good.
Still, Val was terribly afraid that if they'd actually given it a try, she might have ended up killing him. She did have a precedent of exacting revenge to contend with. It's not that she didn't trust herself, just… they were better off apart.
Valerie found it both sad and amusing that she had more contact with the Tubbs family than the Prodigal Son himself. They were all abuzz about the mysterious request and wondering when Rico would finally announce his marriage and future wife to them.
She'd been sure to tell them it wasn't her. Val snorted in amusement. Like she'd ever leave New York and move to Florida! Miami was a great place to visit, but she was a City girl, through and through. It struck her hard that even though Rico was Bronx-born and raised, she'd never considered he might move back with her, even though his family was here. Not likely he'd ever leave his partner's side, that was certain. Not the way those two were…
Val blinked. Stared at the wall for a few moments to regroup.
"Jesus, I wasn't a very good cop, was I?!" Val muttered to herself. The more she thought about it, the more she realized it had been right in front of her face all along.
Valerie was going to have to slap Rico the next time she saw him. Before or after she congratulated him and Sonny, she hadn't quite decided yet. She laughed out loud.
Damned if the rumors weren't true.
