Summary: Sonny has some things to tell his son Billy, and it's probably the most difficult conversation he's ever had. Sometimes, though, the things adults stress over are met with matter-of-fact resilience from their children.

Time can heal, but the scars only hide the way you feel
And it's hard to forget how I left you hanging

The Testarossa cruised slowly around the parking lot. Strictly speaking, the person behind the wheel was both too young to be driving and too old to be getting fake driving lessons from his dad. Nevertheless, some things were tradition.

“We’re gonna pull it over right here,” Sonny, in the passenger seat, told his son as his own hand covered Billy’s, guiding the steering wheel to the side. “Go real easy on the brakes,” he instructed.

They didn’t grab at all, but the left tire did bump the curb slightly.

Sonny shifted it into park and turned off the key. He took a deep breath and hesitated before taking the plunge, feeling the weight of unspoken regrets. He had a lot to say, and none of it was easy, but it was necessary. “We both know I haven’t been the greatest dad, and I know it’s gonna take time for you to trust me, but I promise you I’m going to be around more now.”

“Because you’re not a cop anymore,” Billy sought clarification.

Sonny nodded. “Yeah, that’s part of it.”

Billy reached into the takeout bag between them and pulled out a handful of French fries, munching on them in obvious thought before speaking again. “And because you got married again?”

Sonny chuckled despite the nerves that churned his stomach. The part of him that wasn’t freaking out was feeling proud that his son was so observant. “What makes you think that?”

Billy shrugged. “Wedding ring,” he nodded to the band on Sonny’s left hand. “Like mom and Bob wear. She lost hers one day and tore the house apart till she found it. Made me help look.”

“Where was it?” Sonny asked, guiltily welcoming the distraction from the topic at hand.

“Under the soap dish in the kitchen.”

“Where she put it when she took it off to do the dishes,” Sonny guessed with the accuracy of someone who’d been married to Caroline for years.

Billy nodded. “Yeah,” he said with a grin of remembrance.

“It’s not exactly… I’m not married yet. And it’s not exactly, uh, it’s the other thing I wanted to talk to you about.” Sonny took another deep breath, trying not to hyperventilate. “You remember my partner, Rico?”

“Sure.”

“Well, we, uh… You know, love is a pretty mysterious thing. We don’t choose who we fall in love with; it just happens. And love is the important thing. Not who someone is on the outside, or—” Sonny was having a moment of panic. What was he dumping on this poor kid, on top of all the rest of the stuff he’d had to deal with in his short life?

It hadn’t been easy to make the decision to be honest about this new development, especially with Billy and Caroline, but it was necessary. Sonny had failed in the past, by living lies. This was his last chance, and he he’d finally learned that he couldn’t be the kind of father Billy deserved – and his partner Rico did -- without living authentically. Lies and pretending had almost cost him everything. Healing required honesty.

Billy was peering at his dad, obviously having tired of waiting for him to continue. “Are you trying to tell me you’re marrying Rico?” he asked matter-of-factly, surprising his dad yet again.

“Uh, I… How’d you figure that out so fast?”

Billy shrugged. “I have a friend at school who has two moms.”

“Yeah? Wow. So, um… “

“I guess you were pretty sad after Caitlin died.” Billy observed with an uncanny insight that the young often display.

Sonny swallowed, trying to rein in his emotions. “Yeah. That was a tough time.” Shit, the kid shouldn’t have to deal with the topic of death, either. And what a can of worms that was. “Rico…” he forced himself to continue. “I love him a lot,” he whispered. “He makes me a better person. We can’t get married like your mom and Bob did, but we are going to have what they call a commitment ceremony, and we’d like you to be there…” He cringed inwardly at himself. Great, now he was rambling.

“Do I have to wear a suit?” Billy asked.

Sonny smiled despite himself. “Do you want to wear one?”

Billy made a face. “I don’t really like suits.”

“We’ll see.”

As Sonny watched his son finish off the French fries, he thought about how resilient kids could be. And smart. Something he’d apparently forgotten during his years of sporadic contact. Maybe, hopefully, he hadn’t screwed Billy up too badly after all. He knew the stability of Billy’s home life with Bob and Caroline had a lot to do with that, loath as he was to admit it, but he was Billy’s father – and had something only he could offer his son.

“Can we go to the arcade now?”

“You bet,” Sonny told him with a grin as he got out of the car to switch places.

Maybe their bond could be repaired, as long as he remained committed to being around and not letting it slide. He had Rico’s support and help with that, too, unlike some of the former women in his life, for whom his son had been out of sight, out of mind. If it was important to Sonny, it was important to Rico. With that solid foundation, Sonny knew he could be the kind of father he wanted to be.

The kind Billy deserved.
