Well, I'm going home
Back to the place where I belong
And where your love has always been enough for me
Ricardo Tubbs was going home. Maybe if he repeated it enough times, he could make sense of what sounded like an unknown foreign language.
When he left New York all those years ago, he’d burned all his bridges. Never expected nor planned to ever go back, figuring he’d either be in prison or dead. Bringing the man who killed his brother and destroyed his life to justice had been his all-consuming goal.
Instead, he’d found a new life, a place to belong again.
Rico glanced at the man in the driver’s seat out of the corner of his eye. This man, who had saved his life and his soul and been beside him for five years. It seemed like a lifetime. Now, at the end of another chapter of his life, he asked himself where he truly belonged.
His own words, said two years ago, echoed in his memory.
You owe me your presence in that seat.
Was that over now? Were their debts paid? Or would the weight of unspoken promises be forever unfulfilled? Maybe they were just beginning to make it right.
Maybe.
“What do we owe each other?” he found himself asking Sonny.
After an endless moment, Sonny opened his mouth and said the words.
Funny how life works out sometimes. All he’d needed was someone to belong to.
