Summary: Healing the past will take time, but Rico has a question for Sonny that will take them further along on their journey together.

All that I'm after is a life full of laughter
As long as I'm laughing with you
I'm thinking that all that still matters is love ever after
After the life we've been through
'Cause I know there's no life after you

Rico stood in the kitchen doorway, watching Sonny's shoulders slump as he moped, knowing his mood stemmed from deep-seated self-doubt and guilt that hadn't faded despite the events that had transpired in the last few months. The self-castigation, guilt, and insecurity he'd carried for most of his life hadn't miraculously vanished once they became lovers. It was a reminder of how much healing still lay ahead.

Rico had time and patience. However, he hated it when Sonny was like this and he felt impotent to help. Oh, he said all the right words, his touch anchored and soothed. But there was a core underneath that he couldn't reach. Seeing Sonny hurting had never sat well with him, and now it was even harder to watch.

The thing is, he did know something that would help. Knew the man beneath the image, the things Sonny yearned for even as he believed he didn't deserve them. Knew the fear of losing that was reinforced by everything he'd already lost. He didn't feel he deserved happiness and had trouble believing he would be allowed to keep it. Rico always wanted to be the one who provided what Sonny needed. That was his job, and he took it very seriously.

Rico needed to show Sonny that he didn't have anything to fear. It was real, they were in this together, and he'd always be by his side.

Rico had spent many hours after he’d come to his decision, contemplating how to approach Sonny, searching for words that felt genuine but not overly romantic, something that reflected their true selves. In the end, it looked like plain and straightforward was going to win. Which, in truth, fit them the best.

Wiping suddenly sweaty palms on his slacks, Rico walked into the living room and sat down next to his partner on the couch. Close, sides pressed together in a touch that said, I'm here.

"Hey," he murmured softly, a question behind the simple greeting.

"I know," Sonny sighed, interpreting it and heading off anything more. "I'm just…"

"In one of those moods?" Rico finished for him.

"You know me. I'll get over it."

"I have something for you," Rico told him softly, willing his voice not to waver. "Hold out your hand."

Sonny gave him a suspicious look but did as told.

Rico dropped the ring into the outstretched palm and closed Sonny's hand over it. "It was my father's wedding ring," he revealed quietly. "I mean, we can't exactly have a wedding, obviously, but if we wanted, we could have one of those commitment ceremony things…" he realized he was babbling at that point but couldn't seem to stop. "And you can't wear it until then, of course, but—"

"Put the damn ring on my finger, Rico," Sonny growled, his voice thick with emotion, eyes moist, revealing the truth of how much this moment meant to him.

So Rico did.

And Sonny never took it off again.

Shortly afterward, Sonny took his old wedding ring and had it melted down and remade. It turned out Rico couldn't wait for the ceremony either, because to have a tangible symbol of what they were to each other after the hell they'd endured and all that had been lost was something they both needed.

Sonny was, underneath the façade, a pretty old-fashioned guy; and Rico, Rico was finding out some things about himself that he never knew until now.

No, they weren't married in the traditional sense and were far from a conventional couple, but they were forever partners, in every way.
