Album: It's Not Over...the Hits So Far
Song: Track twelve: Torches
Summary: Martin Castillo contemplates the ripples in the pond and chooses change over stagnation.

Carry it on, carry it on
Cause we can never right all the wrongs
So leave the past well enough alone...
Change is a part of life, seasons turn, and one should always move in flow with the natural rhythms of the universe. Martin Castillo had learned these lessons and many more long ago, but sometimes lessons needed to be repeated. Self-awareness and introspection are things that must be practiced, just as surely as martial arts and the ease of a Katana in one’s hand. To get lazy with any of them could be a fatal mistake.
Life is a rich tapestry of memories, woven into the fabric of reality. There had been humid nights in the jungle, facing death with Jack at his side, their bond overcoming any odds against them. Warm evenings in the house he’d shared with May Ying, as they became one on cool sheets. Martin had fought against evil for many years, living by his own code. Even in Miami, with his former life lost to him, he continued on the path set long ago. A path that sometimes felt empty now. The reason too often escaped him.
The revolving door of police enforcement in Miami didn’t feel any less futile than trying to rid Southeast Asia of drugs, especially with Sonny Crockett’s disillusioned and increasingly burned-out face in front of him every day. Loyalty and unselfishness were things Martin valued above all else, always refusing to confront the cost. The world broke the good ones, though, and you had to be very careful that it didn’t destroy you, too. Yet still he’d persevered, believing, until one day when the badges of the two best cops he’d ever known had landed at his feet.
And so, the realization had finally come. It was time to stop hiding and live in the world again. To allow himself the smiles, laughter, and love that others took for granted. Lay down the sword, finally, and live.
If Sonny and Rico could find happiness together, beat all the odds and carve out a life for themselves, such an incongruous outcome, maybe it was time for Martin to loosen the tight control he had on himself. You learn from experience and from others. If you’re truly wise, you learn from others’ mistakes.
When you toss a pebble into a lake, the ripples spread outward forever, changing the surface of the water.
Change is growth, and both are necessary to avoid stagnation. It was a lesson Castillo had forgotten, but Sonny and Rico had reminded him.
With one last look over the tranquil garden of the Miami home that had served him so well the past five years, Martin slid his plane ticket into his jacket and strode to the waiting taxi out front. Bound for Thailand.
To finally reunite with the love he’d never truly left behind.
